Multi-spectral imaging


PhenoVation has created several systems that have been specifically developed for capturing multispectral images and data. They are high-accuracy, multispectral, non-destructive imaging systems that can measure a wide range of parameters for morphological and physiological phenotyping. Both KAUTSKY and PAM analyses may be performed instantly on the fluorescence data. With the same optical arrangement used for the fluorescence analysis, multispectral and colour images are captured with the use of a 12-position optical filter wheel. The basic filter set contains NIR, far-red, red, narrow green, wide green, blue and fluorescence filters. The filter set can be customised specifically to suit your wishes, depending on the measurements you need to perform. Our innovative solutions make it possible for the imaging system to focus remotely, through live video imaging. Moreover, the systems work with fixed protocols, which means that focus, light intensity, and other factors are adjusted to suit your set of measurements.

The parameters are calculated per picture and can be displayed and saved as images or saved as data files.


With multispectral measurements, the system can calculate data of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and the chlorophyll & anthocyanin indices. Lastly, several morphological parameters may be measured, such as leaf area, border pixels, masks, and skeleton analyses.

The following systems are designed for multispectral measurements, with each their own specialties: 


Modular multispectral imaging

The PlantExplorer Pro features a modular design that can be detached from its lower half – the  cabinet – and installed on XYZ structures in greenhouses. All the main components for analysis are located at the very top of the structure. The bottom half of the cabinet can be customised to suit your needs. A smaller version can be ordered to suit a tabletop, for instance, or a taller version may be ordered to accommodate larger plants.


This system is able to measure areas up to 50x50 cm, as well as photosynthesis parameters.


Integration into phenotyping systems

The Plant Explorer Pro XL is specifically developed for integration into plant phenotyping systems. These are modular systems which can be used to assess plants in trays, pots, or other plant carriers on photosynthetic performance.


It can image areas up to 80x 80 cm2. This system is also able to measure photosynthesis parameters.


Automatic phenotyping

The PhenoMate XYZ system is designed to automatically measure several hundred small to medium-sized plants and can be used during the entire cultivation process, as it is equipped with ebb and flow systems to irrigate crops.


This system can also measure photosynthesis parameters.


GFP/RFP Expression

The PlantExplorer GFP/RFP can measure the photosynthetic performance of the crop. This system may be used for different research purposes, as it is able to measure photosynthesis parameters, as well as GFP/RFP expression
